Assignment 4
I4
A. Remind us of “the problem” you identified in the previous homework
Problem: A way to combat stolen bikes more conveniently
B. Remind us of the list of 3 needs / engineering characteristics / units / target specifications
It would need to be durable and strong enough to withstand cutting
Have a reliable fingerprint scanner and be relatively easy to program
Waterproof/weatherproof
C. List constraints (your kit, low power motor, any other resources you may have)
We don’t have a fingerprint scanner
Strong material for a bike lock not in the kit
No bolts and screws for the lock to be assembled
Strong motor (stronger than low power motor) to lock and unlock the bike
Cardboard
Switches (buttons)
Tape
D. Generate 10 new solutions, sketched quickly as napkin sketches. These sketches don’t need to be extremely detailed, but try to use the sketching skills you’ve been practicing in class to create simple and clear drawings with annotations to clearly communicate the idea. The sketches should be clear enough that someone just looking at the sketch can understand the idea. The solutions don’t need to be feasible, and they don’t have to address every single need and constraint. Sometimes even slightly infeasible or incomplete ideas can lead to creative and practical ideas. Grading: 0.5 points for each sketch that the TA could decipher with 5 points total for this part of the assignment.
